On this August 14 edition of This Day in Music History, we begin by honoring the Navajo Code Talkers and all who have served our nation before turning up the volume for Neil Peart’s first concert with Rush, Sonny & Cher taking “I Got You Babe” to No. 1, an early Led Zeppelin performance in Austin, David Crosby and the Byrds, the Rolling Stones at Chess Studios, and the space-rock road from Hawkwind to Lemmy and Motörhead.
We’ll also remember the Beatles’ final live performance for The Ed Sullivan Show, take a trip into The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and celebrate the legendary Meat Loaf, Jim Steinman, Bat Out of Hell, and the powerful women who helped make those unforgettable performances soar—including Ellen Foley, Karla DeVito, Cher, Lorraine Crosby and Patti Russo.
Then it’s time to wish Steve Martin a happy birthday as we remember The Jerk, his lovely “Tonight You Belong to Me” duet with Bernadette Peters, and Steve’s remarkable lifelong love of the banjo.
And because August 14 is National Creamsicle Day, CLASSICKONG has somehow ended up broadcasting in a white suit while eating a Creamsicle… completely unaware of the giant carnivorous plant creeping up behind him.
