๐ŸŒด California Dreamin’… and the Soundtrack of Our Lives

Some days in music history are filled with chart-topping records. Others remind us of the incredible musicians whose talent helped shape generations.

June 27 is one of those days.

Today we celebrate the 84th birthday of Bruce Johnston, whose harmonies, songwriting, and musicianship became an important part of the Beach Boys’ legendary sound. While many fans know him for classics like California Girls, Help Me, Rhonda, and Wouldn’t It Be Nice, Bruce also wrote the Grammy-winning classic “I Write the Songs,” which became one of Barry Manilow’s signature recordings.

His contributions helped define an era when sunshine, surfboards, and unforgettable harmonies captured the spirit of California for the entire world.

๐Ÿ„ Surf’s Up!

The California sound didn’t belong to just one band.

On this day in 1964, Jan & Dean released “Little Old Lady from Pasadena,” another timeless surf-rock classic that still brings smiles more than sixty years later.

For a brief but magical period, Jan & Dean and the Beach Boys stood shoulder-to-shoulder, creating the soundtrack of summer with catchy melodies, fast cars, and endless sunshine.

๐ŸŽธ Remembering Chris Squire

We also pause today to remember Chris Squire, the legendary bassist and founding member of YES, who passed away on June 27, 2015.

Known for his unmistakable Rickenbacker bass tone, Chris transformed the bass guitar into a true lead instrument. His playing on classics like Roundabout, Starship Trooper, and Heart of the Sunrise helped define progressive rock and inspired generations of musicians.

Remarkably, Chris was the only member to appear on every YES studio album from the band’s founding through 2014โ€”a testament to both his dedication and his enduring influence.

His music continues to resonate with listeners around the world.

๐ŸŽ‰ Lorrie Morgan (1959)

๐ŸŽ‰ Leigh Nash (1976)

๐Ÿ“ We also remember legendary songwriter Doc Pomus (1925), whose incredible catalog includes classics such as Save the Last Dance for Me, This Magic Moment, and Viva Las Vegas.
