📺 American Bandstand Goes National
August 5, 1957
On this day in 1957, American Bandstand made its national television debut on ABC, forever changing the way America discovered popular music.
Hosted by Dick Clark (1929–2012), the Saturday afternoon program became one of television’s most beloved institutions. During its remarkable 32-year network run (1957–1989), the show aired more than 3,000 episodes, introducing countless artists and new musical styles to millions of viewers across the country.
Dick Clark eventually earned the nickname “America’s Oldest Teenager,” thanks to his youthful personality and lifelong passion for music.
Over the years, viewers watched performances from artists including Buddy Holly (1936–1959), Chuck Berry (1926–2017), The Beach Boys, Stevie Wonder (born 1950), The Jackson 5, Madonna (born 1958), Prince (1958–2016), and many more.
One of the show’s most memorable traditions came when Dick would hand a microphone to someone in the audience and ask:
“What do you like about this song?”
The answer became almost legendary…
“It’s got a good beat…and it’s easy to dance to!”
Even today, that simple phrase instantly brings a smile to music lovers who grew up watching the show.
💿 Album Spotlight
The Beatles — Revolver (1966)
Released in the United Kingdom on August 5, 1966, Revolver marked a turning point for The Beatles.
Produced by George Martin (1926–2016), the album demonstrated just how adventurous popular music could become inside the recording studio.
Among its classic tracks are:
- “Taxman”
- “Eleanor Rigby”
- “I’m Only Sleeping”
- “Here, There and Everywhere”
- “Good Day Sunshine”
- “Tomorrow Never Knows”
Nearly six decades later, Revolver is still regarded as one of the greatest and most influential albums ever recorded.
🤘 Hard Rock Spotlight
Aerosmith Signs with CBS Records (1972)
On this day in 1972, Aerosmith signed its first major recording contract with CBS Records, a moment that launched one of the most successful careers in American rock history.
Formed by Steven Tyler (born 1948), Joe Perry (born 1950), Tom Hamilton (born 1951), Joey Kramer (born 1950), and Brad Whitford (born 1952), the Boston band would go on to become Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees and one of the best-selling rock bands of all time.
Their CBS studio albums include:
- Aerosmith (1973)
- Get Your Wings (1974)
- Toys in the Attic (1975)
- Rocks (1976)
- Draw the Line (1977)
- Night in the Ruts (1979)
- Rock in a Hard Place (1982)
Those albums gave us classics including “Dream On,” “Sweet Emotion,” “Walk This Way,” “Last Child,” and “Back in the Saddle.”
Not bad for one signature on a recording contract.
🎸 Women Who Rock
The Runaways Are Formed (1975)
On August 5, 1975, producer Kim Fowley (1939–2015) helped assemble The Runaways, one of the first successful all-female hard rock bands.
The original lineup featured:
- Joan Jett (born 1958) — rhythm guitar and vocals
- Sandy West (1959–2006) — drums
- Cherie Currie (born 1959) — lead vocals
- Lita Ford (born 1958) — lead guitar
- Jackie Fox (born 1959) — bass
At a time when hard rock was overwhelmingly dominated by men, The Runaways proved that women could rock every bit as hard. Their fearless attitude, energetic performances, and powerful songs helped pave the way for countless female artists who followed.
Their albums include:
- The Runaways (1976)
- Queens of Noise (1977)
- Waitin’ for the Night (1977)
- And Now… The Runaways (1978)
Live album:
- Live in Japan (1977)
Their signature song, “Cherry Bomb,” became a rock anthem, and members of the band went on to enjoy successful solo careers—particularly Joan Jett, who founded Blackheart Records, and Lita Ford, who became one of the most respected guitarists of the 1980s hard rock scene.

The Rolling Stones — “Miss You” (1978)
On this day in 1978, The Rolling Stones, led by Mick Jagger (born 1943) and Keith Richards (born 1943), held the No. 1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Miss You.”
Blending classic rock with disco influences, the song demonstrated the band’s willingness to evolve while remaining unmistakably The Rolling Stones.

Happy Birthday, Willie Weeks!
Born August 5, 1947, Willie Weeks is regarded as one of the finest session bassists in modern music.
His remarkable career includes performances with:

- Donny Hathaway (1945–1979)
